About Mattioni Plumbing, Heating & Cooling

For over 75 years, Mattioni Plumbing, Heating & Cooling has been a trusted name across Southeastern Pennsylvania, serving Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Berks counties from five offices. Today, the company runs its business card, checking account, bill pay, and expense management on Affiniti.

Before Affiniti

A reliable system with constant clutter

Founded in 1948 on the Mattioni family farm outside Downingtown, Mattioni Plumbing, Heating & Cooling has grown from a small local operation into a modern plumbing, HVAC, and sewer service leader with five offices across four counties, still rooted in the values that defined its beginning. For third-generation owner Michael Mattioni, maintaining that legacy is about balance: honoring tradition while embracing innovation.

For years, the company ran its finances the way most contractors do: a bank for deposits and operating cash, a business credit card for purchasing, paper checks and ACH for vendors, and spreadsheets to tie it all together. None of the pieces talked to each other. Each department handled purchases differently, receipts trickled in long after the fact, and customer checks piled up until someone could get to the bank.

“We’d look mid-month and think a department was running at 15% materials [cost to revenue],” Michael recalled. “By the time we closed the books, it was 18%. The lag made it hard to see what was really happening.”

The lag had real consequences. Without line-item detail on what each job consumed, the team was pricing and managing work on numbers that were weeks old by the time they were trustworthy.

The switch

A card that came with an operating system

Michael initially came to Affiniti through ACCA for the card. The approval was fast: $500,000 with no back-and-forth, and the line has since grown to $1,000,000 as the business has.

“Approval was so painless I barely noticed,” he said. “We got the line we needed right away, and everything switched over smoothly. No downtime, no headaches.”

The next surprise was everything connected behind the card. During implementation, the Affiniti team set up Mattioni’s 24 employee cards with receipt capture already built in and synced to the company’s accounting system from day one. “It wasn’t something I was even looking for,” Michael admitted. “But once we started using it, I realized how much time and chaos it eliminated, for me and for my back office.”

Over the following months, the rest of the operation followed. The company opened its Affiniti business checking account in June 2026, and by late July it was paying vendors through the platform too. Within a year of applying for a credit card, Mattioni was running its card, its checking account, its payables, and its expense management in one place.

Running the business on Affiniti

Receipts that file themselves

Michael now calls Affiniti’s expense management a “10/10.” At the center of it, the receipt capture workflow is three steps: buy, snap, send. A technician texts in a photo of the receipt with a quick memo. Affiniti’s AI reads the receipt, matches it to the card transaction, and syncs the whole thing into the accounting system. If a receipt hasn’t come in, the system reminds the technician, not the back office.

Across more than 1,400 receipts, the match rate is 99%. Technicians have added more than 770 memos at the point of purchase, so every line item carries the job or department it belongs to before anyone in the office touches it. That tagging turns every purchase into live project data. Michael can see what each job has spent against its budget while the work is still underway, and catch a department trending over on materials in time to do something about it.

“We used to chase receipts at the end of every month,” he said. “Now, everything is organized the moment it’s purchased. We can see our true costs by department in real time.”

Transaction alerts give instant visibility across the team. Michael keeps them on for his own purchases, too.

Banking that fits a trades business

In June 2026, Mattioni moved its checking account to Affiniti. Since then, nearly $10 million has flowed through it: customer payments in, payroll and vendor payments out, all visible alongside card spend in the same dashboard.

The part that matters most for a contractor is checks. Customers still pay by check, and for decades that meant a stack on someone’s desk and a trip to the branch. Mattioni has now deposited more than 550 customer checks, over $1.5 million, straight from a phone. The money lands in the same account that pays the bills, and the deposit shows up next to the invoice it settles.

Paying vendors the right way, automatically

By late July, Mattioni was running accounts payable through Affiniti. In the first 90 days, the team uploaded 142 vendor bills and paid 121 of them through the platform, $3.5 million in total.

The difference is in how they get paid. Affiniti reads each bill, captures the line items, and routes the payment on the right rail for that vendor.

Eighty-nine of those bills, $3.35 million, went to vendors that had never accepted a card. Those payments used to leave by check or ACH as soon as they were due, which made it hard to line up payables with incoming customer payments. Now Affiniti pays them automatically on the business card through bill pay, so cash stays in Mattioni’s account until the card statement is due, giving the team time to collect from customers before vendor payments come out. Twenty-two bills went by check, because some vendors still require it. Ten went by ACH. Michael’s team didn’t need to decide which; the platform recommends automatically.

Because every bill arrives itemized, the materials cost on each job is visible the day the invoice comes in. The 15%-versus-18% problem from the old spreadsheets is gone: the number mid-month is the number at close.

The results

One platform, in under a year

Mattioni didn’t set out to replace its financial stack. It set out to get a better card. Twelve months later, the card, the checking account, vendor payments, check deposits, and expense management all run through Affiniti, under one login, with one support team behind them.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Month-end reconciliation is gone. Receipts and memos are captured at the point of purchase and synced to accounting automatically. The back office reviews exceptions instead of rebuilding the month.
  • Job costs update in real time. Line items from every card purchase and every vendor bill flow in itemized, so materials-to-revenue is visible by department and by job as it happens.
  • $3.35 million in vendor payments now extend cash flow instead of draining it. By paying 89 bills by card through Affiniti in the first 90 days, money that used to leave the day a check cleared now stays working in the business until the card cycle closes.
  • No more bank runs. More than 550 customer checks, over $1.5 million, deposited digitally into the same account that pays the bills.
  • Credit that grew with the business. From $500,000 at approval to $1,000,000 today, underwritten by a team that understands the industry.
  • The same team handles more work. Nearly $10 million through the checking account and $3.5 million in payables since mid-2026, processed by the same team, reducing administrative overhead and the need to add back-office staff as the company grows.

That is what makes Affiniti different from the card Mattioni replaced. It isn’t just a payment method. It is the system the business runs on: where money comes in, where it sits, how it goes out, and how every dollar gets accounted for, all in one place, with one team behind it.

Michael’s advice to other HVAC owners

Michael’s advice to other contractors is to stop thinking of this as a card decision. The card is where it starts. The value is in what sits behind it: the receipts that file themselves, the accounting automation allowing daily closes, the bills that pay themselves on the right rail, the checks that deposit from the truck, and the one dashboard that shows all of it.

“If you want to do the exact same thing, or even run more efficiently, and get more money back, make the switch,” Michael said. “It was little effort for a lot of hands-off gain.”

2.1% cashback requires weekly autopay. 1.75% with semi-monthly autopay. 1% without autopay. Credit limits subject to approval and underwriting.

“We used to chase receipts at the end of every month. Now, everything is organized the moment it’s purchased. We can see our true costs by department in real time.”
